Department of Economics

Macroeconomics and Political Economy

At this chair, we study the dynamic interdependence between political and economic outcomes from a macroeconomic perspective. Macroeconomics studies the effects of economic policies on economic performance over time. Policies, however, reflect the aggregation of preferences of those agents who, in a society, are empowered with political rights. Such preferences vary across social groups and over time depending on a number of factors, both economic and cultural. We apply the analysis to a variety of areas, including fiscal and monetary policy, issues in development economics (e.g., child labor regulation), competition policy, labor market regulation and modern pension systems. We also study more general theoretical and empirical aspects of economic growth and development, and of the organization of financial markets and firms.
